Curricular & Co-Curricular Orchestras
Repertory Orchestra
Students in Rep Orchestra work on and perform a variety of different kinds of music. Refining basic skills and applying them in new ways is the focus of this ensemble. Repertory Orchestra is directed by Kristine Wiese.
Varsity Orchestra
Students in grades 10-12 can participate in Varsity Orchestra. These students focus on going beyond the notes and rhythms to create nuanced performances of a variety of styles and genres of music. Varsity Orchestra students also participate in large group and solo & ensemble festivals. Varsity Orchestra is directed by Kristine Wiese.
Concert Orchestra
Concert Orchestra is the most advanced orchestra at BHS. It is open to juniors and seniors by audition. Students in this ensemble continue to apply the skills they have learned in Freshman and Varsity Orchestras to more challenging music. This group performs at many concerts, contests and festivals throughout the year. Kristine Wiese directs the Concert Orchestra.
Chamber Strings I
Chamber Strings I is a select ensemble comprised of 11th and 12th grade string musicians. This ensemble performs a wide range of music from classical standards to jazz. Chamber Strings I has an active performance schedule. All members of this ensemble must also be enrolled in Concert Orchestra.
Chamber Strings II
Chamber Strings II is for students in any curricular orchestra wishing to have the opportunity to challenge themselves with additional music and being in a chamber music setting.
Symphony Orchestra
Symphony Orchestra is a combination of Concert Orchestra members and select winds and percussion from Concert Band. These two ensembles join together during morning rehearsals to prepare symphonic works for performance.
FAQs
Freshmen and Varsity Orchestra Dress Code
Freshmen and Varsity Orchestra students will purchase the following clothing for their performances:
Black, long-sleeved, button down dress shirt with a collar with no tie
Black dress pants (No yoga pants, stretch pants, or jeans)
Long black socks
Black dress shoes
Concert Orchestra Dress Code
Students in Concert Orchestra will be provided with a tux or gown for their performances. Students are responsible for providing their own black dress shoes and black socks.
Lessons
Orchestra students are highly encouraged to take private lessons with an expert on their instrument. BHS has a variety of ways to connect students with an appropriate teacher. Please contact your child’s director for more information.
